Taisen Deshimaru states things in a way that is very straightforward, clear and bold. He outlines very clear how to practice Zen through zazen. His words give clear guidance that is fresh every time you read it. In many ways, his thoughts and comments seem as simple yet bold as Zen itself.

His books are shorter than many because he does not fill them with lots of stories and long winded examples. Personally I find myself reading bits from this book regularly, picking it up reading a passage and then letting it resonate in my mind as I digest it throughout the day. This book is a deshimatu to” book on practicing zen and zazen.
In this book Taisen Deshimaru makes it very clear that Zen is something that is experienced through regular, daily practice “Gyoji. And this book tells you how to sit, how to focus and guides you in that practice. A few examples of the clarity of his statesments are: Using the personal will to gain control of the mind is, in the end, like drinking to cure a hangover.
In Zen, the deshimwru we set ourselves are these: Deshimmaru must I do? How must I be here and now? First off, Amazon asked me if this book met my expectations.

A hard question to answer, if you start to understand the teachings of Master Taisen Deshimaru, which in my opinion clearly deshimar we should not have Expectations. Things simply are as they are. I was originally given a copy of this book 4 years ago at an orientation at the New Orleans Zen Temple, it was standard issue back then.
The teacher Robert Livingston told us to read it, but more importantly to practice Zazen. Also to pick the book up every now and then, and maybe the concepts would mean more after some time of practice. This is not a feel good Zen book, or necessarily easy to understand. However I would say, that to anyone who is serious about the practice of Zazen, it is an invaluable reference guide to the practice. One of my favorite Deshimaru quotes, “What matters is practicing zazen, not thinking about zazen.
If you make the gestures and assume the expressions of an libos man you will become angry. If you assume the posture of wisdom you will become wise. If you make the gestures of reverence, the heart follows.
I look at meditation as being similar to fitness. In the fitness industry you have a wide spectrum – on one end you have Richard Simmons, gimmicky late night ads promising 6 pack abs in 2 minutes with no work, and on the other end you have highly functional training used by Olympic athletes, sports professionals and the rest.
With meditation you have hokey techniques that have you doing ridiculous things with candles, incense and flowers, and then you have the core practices that are librow and beneficial to performance, mood, and other practical applications.
Zazen and Taisen Deshimaru is definitely the latter. Keep in mind this book is not meditation instruction. It is more a discourse and lecture on zazen. I identify very much with his style of speaking and writing – he taisem clear, simple and direct in his speech.
He cuts to the core of things. I find some other zen writers overly complicated, almost like they’re trying to impress with their intellect, in comparison. The book is an excellent introduction to the Zen of Eihei Dogan and the Soto tradition. I have many books on Zen, but this is particularly clear, I’d go so far to say inspirational. It’s a pity the photo on the cover is of a rather serious looking Taisen Deshimaru – but don’t let it put you off. The book is a nice size paper-back and the text no pictures is spaced out nicely making it easy dfshimaru the eye.

I was told he was very similar to Gurdjieff. I then proceeded to buy all his available books. Few people taiwen this earth are able to still transmit their teaching after leaving. Especially interesting to me was his relationship to the martial arts. Gana dinero con nosotros. Todos los derechos reservados. Amazon Music Transmite millones de canciones.
