Writing as Amanda Quick Lie by Moonlightetc. Photographer Venetia Milton supports her brother, sister and maiden aunt while keeping secrets: Heir to a generations-old clandestine association of alchemists, scientists and dabblers in psychic phenomena, Gabriel has a few secrets of his own. After his servants report his death to authorities to confound his enemies, grieving Venetia begins posing as his widow, with Gabriel soon showing up on her doorstep very much alive.

Miffed, she consigns him to the attic, but their chemistry quickly reignites; while tracking down one murderous, blackmailing thief after another, they steal opportunities for fervent encounters in the garden, in the carriage, in the society’s mansion and at home.

But the evildoers still want Gabriel’s family secrets—and now they want Venetia as well. Women masquerade as men and criminals masquerade as aristocrats in a society so full of disguise that not even second sight provides much protection.

But with Quick’s stylish dialogue, compelling secondary characters and near-operatic denouement, fans won’t need or want it. Photographer Venetia Milton is a spinster by Victorian standards. Economically strapped, she’s also the sole support of her aunt and younger siblings.

Things start to look up when she is chosen to photograph a collection of artifacts belonging to the Arcane Society, a year-old clandestine organization founded by an alchemist.

The collection is housed in an isolated gothic mansion, and Venetia finds herself there in the company of handsome and mysterious Gabriel Jones. Deciding that it’s now or never for love, Venetia seduces him, only to lose the man of her dreams in a fire set by a nefarious enemy.

Venetia resourcefully moves on, opening a portrait shop and assuming the persona of Gabriel’s grieving widow. Jones becomes the toast of London, a surprising turnaround, but not nearly as astonishing as Gabriel’s reappearance, and the danger she finds herself in.

Quick’s latest is a clever and entertaining tale about secrets, from a secret society to secret powers to a secret theft. Quick also slips in serious observations about the status of women, debunking the all-too-common assumption that feminism isn’t alive and well in the romance genre.

With her witty dialogue, multidimensional characters complete with eccentricities and psychic abilities, clever plotting, and generous humor, the perennially popular Quick has penned another surefire winner. Quick’s Regency genre novels.

Recently laughed my way through “Mistress,” and consider it a keeper. Thus, I was quite disappointed to discover that the 1st in her Arcane Society series failed to kfentz me I mean, I went from thinking, “Oh, goodie! There’s 5 or 6 more to go,” to “Oh, dear. I wonder if it’s worth trying the 2nd one? I did finish the book, but tempted to discard it several times.

This is the story of Venetia Milton, a 19th-Century photographer who takes a job in a remote I never could figure out where location for a wealthy and attractive client, Gabriel Jones. Memorable sex ensues — the flirtation prior to their encounter was probably the best part of the book — followed by a home invasion of sorts and a disastrous fire.

In their next encounter, months later in London, the two lovers have become distant and full of restraint. This is due, evidently, to Venetia’s sense of propriety. They agree–for purposes of solving the Arcane House burglary and ongoing kfentz cohabit and to appear married. It seemed very stilted to have her be so stand-offish even some secret musings about her desire for Jones would have gone a long waywith the hunky Gabriel living in Venetia’s attic and her bouncing out to run her photo studio or pursue her own leads every day.

Overall, this book didn’t ktentz for me. After one night of passion, Venetia Milton is stunned to read of Gabriel Jones’ death. However, the sizable fee she earned by photographing the artifacts belonging to the Arcane Society is enough for her to embark on a career as a society photographer. Taking on the persona of a widow, ‘Mrs Jones’ is doing quite well. Then Gabriel Jones miraculously returns from the dead, ready to take up his life as her husband.

Of course, this barely scratches the surface of an intricate plot involving artifacts, secret society, and several attempts on Venetia’s life. Quick never makes a misstep threading her way through the intricacies of plot, all the while weaving a skein of jaybe around the growing love between Venetia and Gabriel.

She is hired by the Arcane Society to photograph various relics in a remote house.

There she meets Gabriel Jones and decides to seduce him. After one night, danger comes to the house and Gabriel sends Venetia away.

She learns of his death in the newspaper that Mr. Jones was found dead. She decides to adopt his jayme in her pretense of being a widow for her business. She is surprised when several months later her dead “husband” returns. I loved this book because I was entranced by Venetia and Gabriel. The characters are strong, well drawn and interesting. The characters are on the same page almost immediately and their sexual chemistry exudes from the pages. The entire world created better is fascinating.

This book is the beginning of a great series. I especially like how the mysteries mayne spread out amongst the various books and yet each book is complete unto itself.

I’ve read this book a half dozen times and could read it a dozen more. One person found this helpful.

I have this one in hard cover and enjoyed it. She always provides a good read and leaves you wanting more. I bought one of her books as Jayne Castle a few years ago and liked it so much, I went to the Library and krdntz reading anything she wrote. It took me a couple months. I love to re-read my favorite authors. I’m now in the process of collecting her books for my Kindle so that I have them on hand anytime I need a good read. See all reviews.
