I nivn this story w-a-ay back when and remembered enjoying it back in them olden times. It must run about nine or ten thousand words, which qualifies it as a novelette. The moon suddenly turns daylight bright and Stan and Leslie realize, with growing horror, what that must mean; the sun must have gone nova.

The day side of the Earth has already been blasted clean of life and the night side has only hours to live. What would YOU do? The story is well put together and written. Given the date and time just past midnight I bought it and just re-read it.

It holds up well despite a few asides that date it to the early 70s. It is every bit as good a read now as it was when I was a kid. There is more to it than one might expect from this synopsis, but that would spoil the reading experience. For the price, it is certainly a worth while read. This is a short book. A decent read, nothing that knocked my socks off, but it did have an element of suspense about it that kept me interested enough to want to finish the book.

The climax definitely had a twist to it and overall, I felt satisfied when I got to the last page, and not like I was left hanging or with too many unanswered questions, as seems to often be the case with many of today’s writers who are probably setting the stage for some sort of sequel.

Although this book would easily lend itself to such, nonetheless. This in a short story format is the epitome of the best of speculative science fiction. Start with a scientific premise, no matter how far fetched, and build a story about how an individual or society would react to it. Immerse the reader into this plausible, based on the original premise, scenario and make them connect on an intimate viscerally believable level with your characters.

Lead them towards a destination on a path they think they know but then veer off in another unexpected direction changing the whole outcome swinging their emotional reactions completely around. Then end with a new universe of possibilities, and usually inconstatn, opening up before the reader. Amazingly a master like Niven, who can craft sagas of epic proportions spanning multiple volumes, can also do this all within the confines of a short story.

One person found this helpful. This early text by Larry Niven is really only a novella, but whether read at the time of its first publication or today it sticks powerfully in the mind. It is almost impossible to nivfn what it’s nivven without spoiling the plot. Suffice it to say that it starts from the point of view of an ordinary American guy in an ordinary American apartment, and then takes him real-time through his understanding of and reactions to an extraordinary celestial event.

Where it is so remarkably modern is in the realism, including the occasional quirkiness, of its depiction of human psychology and behaviour, lightened up by the overtone of humour that is often found in Niven’s best work.

The science here is well under the control of the fiction, and should make the work appealing even to those who consider themselves allergic to the clunkier traditional versions of SF.

Very short story, nicely written, really an outline for a novel. Sci-fi buffs will see the influence of this diddy in film and novels of more substantial length but without the quality of Niven’s feel for character development evident in even this little piece. I have read everything Larry Niven has written. He is one of the best sci-fi authors aroound and has been inonstant the 70’s. I loved the development of the “last night” Definitely a twist on the end of the world stories, Hope that Larry Niven will write a sequel.

Be aware, this is a short story not a full novel or collection. I was a bit disappointed with the length See all 31 reviews.
