Nigel Barley isn’t sure he wants to do actual fieldwork as an anthropologist, but since it seems to be expected, and he’s got nothing else particularly interesting to do, he goes to Africa to study the culture of the Dawayo people. It’s totally British, totally honest, and utterly candid.

As an anthropologist myself, I related to almost everything here. Barley avoids sowing any oats Doing field work is, as the author suggests early on, a kind of rite of passage for would-be anthropologists.

This book should appear to anyone who is interested in the sorts of things that can happen when one tries antroplogo spend time in an ‘alien’ community.
